Inappropriate use of antibiotics, combined with poor hygienic practices, accelerates the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Keeping antibiotics effective is everyone’s responsibility! Friday, November 18, is European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD), organized for the 9th time. Below you can find a short overview on some of the events and actions related to the EAAD.
ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control), in coordination with the European Commission, is organising an EU-level launch event to mark the EAAD. The event will take place on 18 November from 09:30 to 13:00 in Brussels. The title of the event is “The future is now”. The event will be web streamed and ECDC will be tweeting live. Already on the eve of EAAD i.e. on 17 November, Health First Europe organises a meeting of the European Parliamentary Interest Group on Innovation in Health and Social Care to discuss tackling antibiotic resistance and healthcare-associated infections. In addition, ECDC has published an animation video on the spread of antibiotic resistance. It explains how antibiotic resistance spreads in animal farming, in the community, in healthcare facilities and through travel. The video was developed as part of ECDC´s efforts to support national campaigns on prudent antibiotic use.
