Helicobacter pylori is involved in almost all cases of duodenal ulcer and is also found in most cases of gastric ulcer. Chronic inflammation of the gastric mucosa caused by H. pylori infection can progress to atrophic gastritis if the infection is left untreated. It may also contribute to the development of stomach cancer. Once H. pylori infection has been diagnosed, the patient can be treated with antimicrobial drugs.
