The steroid assays are based on the RIA/IRMA technique, and they measure fertility hormones, cortisol and the steroid-binding globulin SHBG.

The main indication for assay of fertility hormones and SHBG are reproductive disorders, steroid-hormone secreting tumours, amenorrhoea, hirsutism, virilism and altered onset of puberty.

Cortisol determinations are indicated in suspected overproduction or underproduction of cortisol by the adrenal cortex.
